Cell Phones and Messaging

American cell Phones

Most American Cell companies function in Cuba but can be quite costly and signal is spotty. But if you have a smart phone, you can still usually connect to WIFI when available for internet/email services.

It’s a good idea to contact your cell phone company before you leave to see if they have negotiated any new service plans with Cuba (many are working on it currently). For example Sprint has offered a $10 special for just 10 minutes for emergency use. Verizon allows texting at a reasonable price.nKeep in mind that there is only one government owned telephone company in Cuba called ETECSA. This means all text messages in or out can get “clogged up”.

It’s not uncommon to have your text messages pile up and not get through to you and then a couple days later they all come in.

Calling Rates

Calling rates vary but as a rule of thumb it’s around $2.99/min to call from Cuba to the US/ vice versa. (That’s why most folks connect to wifi and then call on Whatsapp or FB Messenger)

Sending and receiving texts can run .50 -.99 cents each.

WhatsAPP & Facebook Messenger

WhatsAPP, Facebook Messenger are the best free apps to call home using wifi.  As back up another option is IMO. You can Download the free IMO app on your cell phone. Ask your loved ones to do the same.

Be sure to set up an account and connect with each other/test it before you leave. When you connect to WIFI in Cuba, you can send live texts. Sometimes you can also do a voice call, although it can be spotty.

Family & Friends Getting in Touch with You

If you have contacts outside of Cuba that need to reach you urgently we suggest having them call your cell phone or the contact information for the hotel/casa you’re staying.

Local Information

Information Trying to find a phone number for a local business/restaurant? If you can speak Spanish, you can dial 113 from any landline in Cuba and ask the operator.

Group Cell Phones

If you’re traveling in a group, a Cuban loaner phone will be provided to you (1 per casa) to make quick coordination if needed with other group members in another casa.

There are only a few prepaid minutes on it. Please do not use the phone for any other activities.
